Why Do Bullies Act That Way?
Following is from the wonderful web-site http://kidshealth.org Check it out, it has wonderful information and advice for kids, parents and teachers.
"Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful."
"Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they've seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves."
"Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don't understand or care about the feelings of others"
"Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all."

Bully and Victum Trapped Together!
Calbert and Ernie enter the storage room. The door closes behind them. Suddenly, the fire alarm starts blaring and the boys realize they are trapped in the storage room, as the school burns around them. There is only one way out, though a small window high in the room. Ernie lifts Calbert up and pushes him out through the window. As Calbert runs from the burning building, Ernie wonders if the boy, he has mistreated so badly, will continue to run to safety or will he come back to get me?

Off to the Big Apple
I will be heading to New York City early Friday morning for a two day conference/pitch. I will be speaking to producers and agents about Calbert and Facing the Bully. Very exciting. I have never been to New York and am very grateful to have this opportunity! Never know what might become of the trip, I will also have the opportunity to meet other authors, which I think is pretty cool. =)

FEAR sets in for CALBERT as his Bully appears!
“Hey, look there!”
I say as some bad guys come into view from the cornfield. I sink lower in the tree so that the outlaws
can’t see me. I pull my pistol from its
holster, and bang bang bang, I got
him. He won’t be bothering anybody
anymore.
Hey, Jason and Ethan
are making a fort. “Wait a minute. I’m coming over to play with you.” Jason loves to build teepees and
shelters. He is two years older than I
am and knows all about those kinds of things.
“Hey, Jason, do you remember the time we made an oven outside using a
rock? I hope we get to do that
again. It was so cool!”
“Sure, but next time, we are
going to
have to wash the rock off first. The dirt made them a little crunchy from the
last time.” Jason laughs.
Jason
is being too bossy and Ethan keeps tearing down my part of the fort. “I’m
not playing with you guys anymore.” I
tell Jason.
“Go ahead
‘Shorty’.” Jason replies
“My legs may be short, but I
can run faster than you,” I tell Jason.
The new shoes got last weekend make me even faster.
There go our two dogs barking
again, I wonder what they are after this time.
Maybe they have cornered an animal, or just maybe something is going on
I need to take care of with my six-shooters.
“Nolan, Star!” I yell as I start
walking toward the dogs.
I am almost at the gate when
I see the very familiar red bike coming toward the house. It’s Ernie.
I think he is the meanest kid in the third grade. My stomach’s starting
to get that funny feeling I always get whenever he is around. My heart is racing, and my hands are
beginning to sweat. I wonder what he is
doing at my house. But I
feel brave because Ernie never picks on me when
my Mom is around.
She's one of the teachers at our school.
Slowly, I
begin walking up to the gate. In my loudest, toughest voice, I shout, “Who’s
there?” The kid doesn’t answer me. I can’t see Ernie’s face very well, but I am
pretty sure that is his bike. The rider
on the bike has on a light-blue jacket with the hood up over his head. I can’t remember ever seeing Ernie with a
light-blue jacket.
“What do you want?” I ask in my toughest cowboy voice. “Why did you come to my house?” But this time, I say it under my breath so he
can’t hear.

What does Ernie really need?
Thought-provoking
and entertaining as well, Calbert: The Third-Grade
Cowboy tackles a timely and serious subject of school bullying to which
parents of children and children themselves can actually relate with. Calbert’s
story will awaken the minds of the readers to an alarming situation that
continues to exist not only in the school system but generally, in today’s
society. Furthermore, it represents to readers an arresting story that depicts
two contrasting personalities in Calbert, an adopted child showered with love
by his family and friendship by his peers and Ernie, a child longing for love
from his family and friendship from others but doesn’t get one therefore ends
up being the school bully.

A Cowboys Work is Never Done...Chapter 1
“Bang bang bang!” I
shout. I pull my six-shooters out of my
holster and dart around the corner to my older brother’s bedroom. “Take that!”
I say, pointing my pistol at imaginary bad guys.” Jason yells at me, “Get lost, kid!”
“Kid! Who are you calling a kid? I am Calbert, the toughest cowboy in the
Third
grade,” yell back
at him. “Even my name means ‘cowboy,’ so there.”
I move into the kitchen. You never know what kind of outlaw may have
stopped in for a bite. Especially if
they had fresh baked chocolate chip cookies on their minds. “Bang bang bang!” I shoot again, only to find my little brother
staring back at me. He's the real “kid”
around here. Ethan is two years younger
than I am and very annoying.
Ethan just looks at me and
says, “Calbert, Calbert, Calbert, will you play with me?”
“If you'll play cowboys,” I
say.
“No way,” Ethan replies and then hops out of the kitchen.
I sure don’t know what Mom
was thinking when she adopted Ethan along with Jason and me. We have always been brothers, but this was
our chance to get rid of him—wish we could give him back! Actually, I do kind of like him, but I’m not
going tell him that!
“Yay, it's Saturday,” I yell as I run
outside. My teacher likes me, and I have
lots of friends, but there is this one kid that likes to pick on me sometimes.
On Saturdays, I don’t have to worry about Ernie at all, just about having fun.
I love to play “shoot ’em up” games like cowboy
games. My black cowboy hat fits me just
perfectly, except for the flat part on top. Thanks
a lot, Ethan!

Live or Die...by way of the Bully
But,
when Calbert and Ernie found themselves trapped together in a fire at the
school building during a dress rehearsal for a school program, they must find a
way to work together to escape with their lives. Will Calbert and Ernie be able to put aside
their differences, in order to survive? Or will they end up being burn into
ashes?

Why does Ernie Bully Calbert?
Calbert
wonders why he is Ernie’s favorite victim at school. He learns from Roland, his
trusted friend that Ernie’s dad died a couple of years ago, and Chuck, his step
dad doesn’t really like him mostly because Ernie looks like his real dad, and he has the same name
as him. It makes Chuck jealous of Ernie’s dad. Sometimes he gets really mad at
Ernie for no reason. He doesn’t have any true friends except for Munch, his pet
dog.

New York here I Come!
Yesterday, I was invited to the Big Apple to present Calbert: The Third-Grade Cowboy. I have tentatively accepted, because this small town women is very nervous about not only going to New York City for the first time, but also presenting my book to professionals in the field. However, nothing ventured is nothing gained! So, I will be heading to New York next month for two days.

Bullying is Always a Big Deal!!
The boys and I are back at school. They are there as students and I'm there as a teacher. We have been back now for an entire week. We seem to start earlier and earlier every year, but we are off to a great start. I have noticed that the kids are starting to "stake their claim" and the attention once again has been turned to bullying. However, a bright and hopeful spot, is that the children in my school who have read my book have been coming to me when they are faced with bullies. The trust we had before seems even stronger now. I am very proud of all my students and wish them all a bully free year!

Back to School Time!
Time has come for my boys to be enrolled in school and for all of us to venture out for school supplies. The boys are very excited, however all I see is $$ flying out the door. We are all excited and hopeful for the new year. I am a teacher at my kids school, so playing the teacher/parent roles are sometimes tricky. Now comes the time for all students to start heading back to school, this includes bullies and would be bullies. It's the time of year kids that are being bullied are afraid to go back to school. School bullying is a problem, no matter where you liver or where you are from, someone in your life is facing bullying in some form. Be close to your kids, watch for changes that might indicate they are having a problem with a bully. Have wonderful start to the new school year!

I am using all the funds from my books to take my boys to Disney World. A bit like killing two birds with one stone, I love to write and could get a vacation out of it too! How cool would that be? Working my third book, but this one is going to take some time, in chapter 4 but have barely scratched the surface of this book. This book is about Jason, Calbert's older brother. That is Calbert of Calbert: The Third-Grade Cowboy/Facing the Bully! My new web-site is up and running. Check it out!

Back to my Hometown
I have been asked by my hometown to return and be the Author at the "Meet the Author" part of a festival for kids. They are expecting around 10,000 children, hope I still have a voice when I finish! =) Good think I like to talk. I hope they will be able to see that they can be ANYTHING they want to be, the sky is the limit! Most will be students from the school I graduated from, many years ago, I really am looking forward to the trip!

Trying something new!
Had my first acupuncture treatment today. Jury is still out, but boy is the arthritis in my hands feel so much better than when I walked into the office. No pain, but I didn't really expect any. I am happy I went, another trip back to on Thursday. I have tried Tiger balm and love it, hard to find but I try to keep some around for those really bad days.

When is a Cup not a Cup?
All three of my sons and I are in Taekwondo, last night after an evening
of sparring I asked my 7 year old, while he sucked on a slushy, if he
had worn his cup while sparring. The answer from him was a NO, while
trying to explain to him that he MUST wear his cup, my 4 year old piped
in to let me know that he and the 8 year old had to share a cup.
(Forgetting they did share a single slushy from a single cup) I
explained to him that both the 7 and 8 year old had their own cups. It
was then my friend, who was visiting, pointed out that we were talking
about two different kinds of cups. =) I want Grandchildren, so those boys of my better start wearing their cup!

Kids are Kids are Kids
After a number of years of trying, it became clear that having children
naturally was not an option. For several years I fostered children of
all makes and models, but all have touched my heart and my life. I
recently adopted three brothers, that I had fostered for two years. Not
many people get to "test drive" their kids before they get them, but
those few foster/adoptive parents of us out there do get that chance. If
you think you might be interested in learning more on adopting and/or
fostering children in need, leave me a comment. I'd be happy to talk
with you about my
experience.
experience.
Glorious Rain!
We had a constant steady rain for about 18 hours, it was wonderful. We
are in one of the worst droughts ever recorded for Indiana. The rain is
such a blessing! The trees, grass and even the cows across the street,
got a good drink!

Great Fun!
Just finished, what I would consider, a good showing at my book signing. I love talking with and meeting people, so this was right up my alley! Pulled in about $100, not a bunch, but $100 more than I had when I left home! And that is after the bookstore took their cut. Slowly but surely, this ship will be launched!
Book Signing Today!
I will be signing books at City Center News and Books today from 5:30-7:30pm Eastern time. The signing will be held in downtown Plymouth, IN. I will be signing both Calbert: The Third-Grade Cowboy...Facing the Bully and Lawn-Mower Chronicles. Calbert must work with Ernie, the school bully, in order to survive being trapped in a fire. Calbert must face his bully and get past being bullied. It becomes a matter of life and death. Ernie likes to pick on Calbert for being adopted, this seems to be Ernie's favorite way to torment Calbert.

Time to go Bowling!
I signed the kids and myself up for free summer bowling. The boys don't know it yet, be we will be heading out soon. I think they will be very excited. Last year we signed up for the same program and went at least once a week, not so much this summer. Have a Great Day!

Calbert faces the Bully!
Bullying is a very serious and important subject. But how can we teach adults and children to face these bullies? Whether they are work place bullies or school bullies, the resulting heartache is the same. See how Calbert chooses to face down his bully. In Calbert: The Third-Grade Cowboy...Facing the Bully!
What Better Way to Start the Morning?
My 4 year old started the day off by singing to me, a new song he had made up. With voice high pitched and arms waving, with both enjoyed every minute of it!

The Bully
In Calbert: The Third-Grade Cowboy...Facing the Bully, we look into what makes Ernie the bully. Ernie likes to bully Calbert around for being adopted. Ernie is the biggest bully in school. But what really makes him want to bully Calbert? What are the reasons Ernie likes to bully Calbert at school? This is a must read for parents, grandparents and kids, who are concerned with bullying.

Latest Book Now Available!
Lawn-Mower Chronicles is a humorous look at lawn care. Mowing the lawn sounds easy enough. Those of us with large lawns to mow know
better. How we long for the chance to
climb up on our mower and mow worry free.
Free to finish with all belts still attached. Free to finish with all the blades in
tack. And free to finish with all four
tires still on the lawn tractor. What
about two consecutive times mowing, without any mishaps? Is it even possible? Some of us can only dream.

Calbert!?
Both of my two oldest boys think they are Calbert. I decided they could be anyone they wanted to be in the story, because that is the point of a story anyway. A good story gets the reader involved. However, my second-grade son greeted me in the car with, "Why did you write that part, it made me cry." I asked him what part of the book he was talking about. He was talking about the "Trouble on the Bus" chapter, where Ernie is picking on Calbert about being adopted. As he continued to read he found himself enjoying the book even more. Happy reading to my little guy!

I'm Back
Been a long haul, the past few days, for this indie writer. I have been working for several days to upload corrections. No luck until today. I had to make adjustments to the bottom margin, I hope that helps. For some reason what showed on my computer wasn't what would show up on the review. Can't wait to see if this version turns out the way it is intended to look. Nervous Nelly here for a few days.

Bullying
What is a young boy to do when he is being bullied at school and is afraid to tell anyone? Adoption is a tough step for a child anyway, but when he starts to be bullied because of it the damage is deep.

Get Ready!!!
Calbert: The Third-Grade Cowboy...Facing the Bully, will, hopefully, be ready to purchase by Monday! That is if I don't find more typo's. Wonder how many proof-readers and editors it takes to get it right, but would be a lot worse without all the proofing!! The book already came to me for last proof and I found several mistakes (I hope I got them all, this time). I had to resubmit the interior and will hopefully have that back by tomorrow. This is SO MUCH FUN! I can't wait to start the next book!

More from Calbert the Cowboy - Facing the Bully
The room shook with the sound of an explosion. “Wow, did you
feel that?”
“Yes,
and I heard it too,” Ernie replied. He was speaking faster than before.
“What is happening?”
“I don’t
know!” I answered.
“We
better forget the box of props and get out of here,” Ernie suggested. But
when Ernie grabs the doorknob, it came off in his hand.
“What
are we going to do?” I shout. No answer came from Ernie.
“WHAT
HAPPENED TO THE LIGHTS?” Ernie and I screamed at the same
time.
“I can’t
see a thing. I think things are getting bad out there!”
Ernie
shouts back, “Me too!”
“The
lights keep flickering off and on. We have to get out of here and fast.”
“My
heart is beating so hard. I think my heart might pop out of my chest,” I add.
At that
moment, a blasting, ear-piercing sound starts ringing through the air. It
feels that my ears are bleeding, and even covering them
doesn’t seem to help. I look at
Ernie, and he is trying to plug his ears too. I yell, “What
is that?” Ernie cannot hear me
over the loud ringing.
I look at
Ernie again between flashes of lights, and I see that his face is red but
not the mad kind of red. He looks like he is going to cry.
“Come on, we have to think
now,” I yell as I shake Ernie by the shoulders.

The "Real" Calbert unknowingly helps with idea for the second book.
"Mom, have you ever been on a double Decker bus?" "No, I haven't." "What about a double Decker train?" "Yes, I have. My seat was on the bottom deck, but we were able to go up stairs and look out windows of the top deck." In response to that he responds, "Well, when I ride in a double Decker train, I'm going to sit on the top deck. That way I can fight off any 'bad guys' that try to get on the train."
So, Calbert the Cowboy...here we go again! =)

Exciting Stuff
I have just finished writing a book, which will be on shelves in just a couple of months from now. It is very exciting. The inspiration for this particular book, is loosely based on one of my three boys. He is warm, light hearted and funny, but is also very sensitive and caring. The anticipation is incredible waiting to see Calbert the Cowboy in book form. Everyday is a new adventure. Stay tuned!
Calbert the Cowboy - Facing a Bully
“Bang bang bang!” I shout
as I pull my six-shooters out of my holster. I dart around the corner to my older brother’s bedroom to shoot any marauders that might have come in while I was gone. Jason
yells at me, “Get lost, kid!”
“Kid! Who are you calling a kid? I am Calbert, the toughest cowboy in the second grade,” I yell back at him. “Even my name means ‘cowboy,’ so there.”
Not to be slowed down by my big brother, I move into the kitchen. You never know what kind of outlaw may have stopped in for a bite. Especially if they had fresh baked chocolate chip cookies on their minds.
“Bang bang bang!” I shoot again, only to find my little brother staring back at me. Now he is the one that is the “kid” around here. Ethan is two years younger than I am and is very annoying.
Ethan just looks at me and starts saying, “Calbert, Calbert, Calbert, will you play with me?”
“If you will play cowboys,” I say,
“No way,” Ethan replies and then hops out of the kitchen.
I sure don’t know what my mom was thinking when she adopted Ethan along with Jason and me—wish we could give him back! Actually, I do kind of like him, but I’m not going tell him that!
